The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.
He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
